A Month to Remember

To thank our firefighters for their service keeping our community safe from the devastating January fires, SICI brought a potluck meal to our local fire station.
SICI hosted a Soroptimist 101 session, inviting prospective new members to learn a little more about our growing club.

As we nosh on Thanksgiving leftovers, we at Soroptimist International of Channel Islands are reflecting on the extraordinary community around us. Thank you for being a part of this incredible work, for giving what you can, and for helping SICI continue to grow each month. This club’s strength comes from you all. As we move from Thanksgiving into the December holiday season, these are the people and moments that carry us forward.

A Month to Remember

Here’s a rundown of what we did this past month:

Our club came together to provide women displaced from their homes due to domestic violence with fix-ins for their Thanksgiving table. In total, SICI put together baskets to allow 10 families the opportunity to have a full Thanksgiving meal.
Responding to an urgent call for diapers, SICI rallied together to donate tons of diapers to The Collection of Family Harmony.
SICI participated in the Soroptimist International Fall Workshop. We met with representatives from other clubs, heard from SI leadership, and participated in a day of learning together.

With 35 more bags donated last month, we are SO close to our goal! As the holidays approach, help us hit 300!

Thank you to everyone who came out and made our Barbie Bingo Brunch an incredible success. Soroptimist International of Channel Islands set a new fundraising record, all because of you. As we near the festive season, SICI is pushing on the throttle to make the most impact possible this holiday season. Welcome to November at SICI!

Two weeks ago, SICI member Mikayla Laufer donated her kidney. We commend Mikayla for this incredibly selfless act and wish her a quick and easy recovery!

This past month, SICI made history. With its biggest fundraiser ever in our Barbie Bingo Brunch followed by an extraordinary night of Painting with a Purpose in support of the Stop Human Trafficking campaign, SICI left its mark. See below for some pictures from the events.

Last month, we added 25 more Bold and Worthy bags to our count, meaning 25 more incredible individuals received vital supplies.

On July 2, the California Assembly Public Safety Committee voted to pass Senate Bill 1414, which makes it a felony to engage in buying a child for sex. HOWEVER, the bill fell short of all of our goals as it did not restore the previous iteration that would have prevented the penalty from being reduced to a misdemeanor and freed 16- and 17-year olds from having to prove that they were victims of human trafficking.

As the bill now moves to the Appropriations Committee, we need your help. Contact Governor Newsom NOW and encourage him to restore SB 1414 to its original form (call 916-445-2841)!

Summer is upon us and we are turning up the heat. Over the last several months, Soroptimist International of Channel Islands has successfully engaged hundreds of members, generating an extraordinary impact on our local community (see the thermometer below!). Bold and Worthy Bags Update!

Our Bold and Worthy campaign is reaching new heights! With 15 more bags donated from our Delicate Delights event and 5 participants from our James Storehouse event helped (we outfitted these foster kids aging out of the system), we are up to 166 lives impacted this year!

How You Can Help - We Need More Supplies!

We are still collecting items for our Bold and Worthy Bags! Below is a list of needed supplies:

March 8 is International Women’s Day. Hear how Soroptimist International is honoring the day from the President of Soroptimist International, Bobbi Enderlin:

“The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. The UN recognizes that “Investing in women is a human rights imperative and cornerstone for building inclusive societies.”

Every day, Soroptimists like you and I invest our time, resources and hearts into helping women and girls.

International Women’s Day offers many opportunities to tell our stories and affirm why each of us is proud to invest in women. There’s the new Walk for Women, the International Women’s Day Tea Party and SIA’s parallel CSW event. So much is happening! As we work collectively toward our 2021-2031 Big Goal of investing in the dreams of half a million women and girls, it’s great to be able to celebrate our progress with these events.

We were proud to attend the 90th Anniversary Celebration for Soroptimist International Alhambra, San Gabriel and San Moreno. Thanks to our sister chapters across the world, we have the abililty to empower and lift up women in every corner of the globe.
